Handwriting Services
What ages of children benefit from handwriting tutoring?
The Handwriting Without Tears program addresses pre-writing activities (i.e., coloring, cutting, pencil exploration, fine motor manipulation, positional awareness, etc.), manuscript writing, and cursive writing-- beginning at a pre-k level (usually around age 3) through a grade 5 level. General fine motor skills can also be addressed.
Is the program suitable for children with special needs? What about lefties?
Absolutely! This handwriting program with typically developing students as well as those with learning disabilities, autism, sensory integration difficulties, and ADHD, to name a few. The workbooks and activities used can be modified for the student's level. The books are designed to be friendly to left handed writers.
How is the handwriting evaluation done ? How long does it take?
The Print Tool looks at eight components of printing: memory, orientation, placement, size, start, sequence, control, and spacing. These skills are analyzed through looking at your child's work from school and observing a handwriting session. A formal report explains the eight components or printing, how your child scored, and what areas need improvement. The Print Tool provides a very comprehensive look at your child's printing skills. The evaluation will take between 20-25 minutes.
Is there an evaluation for cursive ?
At this time, Handwriting Without Tears has not developed a cursive evaluation tool, but an informal screening will be administered which will demonstrate your child's strengths and weaknesses, along with a printing evaluation.
How long should daily handwriting practice be at home ?
HWT recommends that a student engage in supervised handwriting practice for 5-10 minutes each day. Remember that more is not always better. Practice letter writing in the sand at the park or finger tracing letters in the bathtub in the water or in the bubbles! Practice should always be fun so that your child will want to learn!
What if my child is learning a different curriculum than Handwriting Without Tears at school?
Some of the basic components that lead to proficient handwriting are the same across curricula. The Print Tool assessment recognizes all handwriting styles and every effort will be made to assist the student in mastering the curriculum used in their school. However, oftentimes students who struggle with other types of handwriting find the simplicity of the Handwriting Without Tears method easier to master.
